Missing Teeth Facts

Here are some interesting facts about missing teeth:

  • A large percentage of older adults end up losing all of their natural teeth.
  • Approximately 4% of adults in the United States do not have any teeth.
  • Almost 180 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth.

If you are missing one or more teeth, Dr. John Savukinas will determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants or implant supported dentures. These permanent tooth replacement procedures are very effective for restoring your smile and proper functioning of the mouth and jaw.

A More Natural Tooth Replacement Option

Dental implants and implant supported dentures continue to be an attractive option for patients with missing teeth. They are a more natural alternative to many available tooth replacement options and can restore your smile and self-confidence. Dr. Savukinas has extensive experience with dental implants and may recommend implants to replace one or more missing teeth. In some cases, implant supported dentures may be a better fit. What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is designed to mimic the tooth structure and fuses directly with the jaw bone. Implants may be used to replace single missing teeth, or to secure an implant bridge or implant supported dentures. The post of the implant is made out of titanium, which is impervious to decay. The titanium screw acts as a very strong base for a dental crown or prosthetic. In most cases, dental implants can help to make the face appear fuller, more youthful, and more attractive. Since the implant stimulates the jaw bone, it can also help prevent bone deterioration.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

Patients receiving dental implants need a certain amount of bone to support the implant. If bone tissue has been compromised, you may still be a candidate for implant supported dentures, or single dental implants if a bone graft is performed. We will use advanced digital technology to capture 3D images of the jaw bone and determine optimum placement of the implants. Dr. Savukinas will also need to review your oral and medical health history to ensure you are a candidate for implants.

The Dental Implant Process

Dental implant placement typically involves two procedures. We will surgically place the implant into the jaw bone and let that heal for up to six months. Next, a prosthetic will be attached to the implant or we will cover the implant with a dental crown. The average dental implant process can take up to eight months with minimal disruption to your day-to-day life. We can discuss the implant process in more detail during your consultation.

Implant Supported Dentures

Dental Implant Supported DenturesImplant supported dentures is a permanent method for stabilizing your denture. During the procedure, Dr. Savukinas will place between 2-6 dental implants in the jaw. A new denture will be made that will attach directly to the dental implants, ensuring a secure and stable restoration. Occasionally, your existing denture can be modified for the procedure.

Patients who opt for implant supported dentures experience greater comfort, better ability to eat and speak clearly, and an improved quality of life. Learn more about dental implants and implant supported dentures by scheduling your appointment with Dr. Savukinas in Rockville, MD today.
