Pulpotomy, also known as a baby tooth root canal, is a common endodontic procedure primarily performed on primary (baby) teeth, although it may be recommended for certain adult teeth under specific circumstances. If you or your child is experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity due to deep decay or trauma, pulpotomy may be an effective way to save the tooth and relieve discomfort.
When decay reaches the innermost part of the tooth — the dental pulp — it can cause inflammation, infection and pain. Left untreated, this can lead to an abscess and ultimately result in tooth loss. Pulpotomy allows our dentist to preserve the tooth by removing the infected or inflamed portion of the pulp while maintaining the health of the remaining tissue.
What to Expect During a Pulpotomy
The pulpotomy procedure begins with the careful removal of the affected pulp tissue inside the crown of the tooth. Once this tissue is removed, the area is thoroughly disinfected to eliminate any remaining bacteria. Unlike a full root canal, a pulpotomy does not require treatment of the pulp within the tooth roots. In many cases, the healthy portion of the pulp can remain intact and continue to nourish the tooth.
After the chamber is cleaned and sealed, a medication may be applied to protect the remaining healthy pulp. The tooth is then typically restored with a dental crown to provide strength and prevent future damage. For pediatric patients, we often recommend stainless steel crowns due to their durability and cost-effectiveness.
When Pulpotomy May Be Recommended for Adults
Although pulpotomy is more common in children, it may be appropriate for adult teeth in certain situations. If a permanent tooth has experienced trauma or deep decay but the roots are not fully developed, a pulpotomy may help preserve the tooth’s vitality and allow for continued root development. This is especially important in younger patients with immature permanent teeth.
